When was the last time you visited one of our incredible museums? For me, taking a break to visit a museum is the perfect way to not only spark my own creativity, but also a reminder of all of the incredible cultural resources and experiences we have in our very own backyard. I recently visited the Torlonia collection of Roman sculptures at the Art Institute of Chicago with a friend on the board of the Art Institute and I was absolutely blown away!
One of the reasons this exhibit is so exciting is that this exhibition of the collection is the first ever in North America, and most of the pieces have not been on display anywhere in the world for more than 70 years. It was thrilling to be one of the first to lay eyes on these historic and beautiful pieces.
The collection is owned by the Torlonias, a wealthy Italian family and includes 622 sculptures, sarcophagi and marble busts ranging from the 5th century BCE to early 4th century CE. All of the pieces currently on display were newly cleaned and preserved, and the Art Institute did such a beautiful job of displaying each and every work. The intricate detail and facial expressions captured in marble is truly a marvel.
The New York Times recently ran an article highlighting the exhibit, which is absolutely beautiful to read on your computer screen, but seeing it in person is a whole different level – I cannot recommend it enough!
The exhibit runs until June 29 and tickets are available here. As a Chicago Realtor, I love sharing unique and exciting experiences that are really only possible in a world class city like Chicago. What cultural experiences have you enjoyed lately? I would love to hear more, and will even put together a list of recommendations for us all to enjoy! Please reach out anytime!
