I have been shopping at SPACE 519, a small boutique in Streeterville, for about three years now. Every time I am there I find new designers to love that I am sure I would not have found anywhere else. My favorite right now is their collection of Fry Powers jewelry. Recently the owners added The Lunchroom, which is a cafe inside the shop that I probably visit about once a week for either a chai latte, almond croissant, or lunch with a client or colleague – there is so much to love! I recently chatted with the owners, Lance Lawson and Jim Wetzel, about their fashion inspirations, sourcing, restaurants and so much more!
What was your inspiration for the shop?
Jim and I have been traveling the world as buyers for over 20 years. We were inspired by the stores we saw in Europe – like Colette and Ten Corso Como – that curated a wide array of categories and brands, and then mixed in a food component. We wanted Chicago to have a world class one-of-a-kind retail space.
What makes SPACE 519 different from other retailers in the area?
We love newness. We don't want to carry the same assortment as the mono-brand luxury stores on Oak Street or the 10,000 square foot shop at Neiman's. We also offer old school customer service and want the whole experience here to be fun. We say no to snotty salespeople or that too-cool-for school vibe.
Where is your favorite place to source products?
We are always shopping – on buying trips and on vacation. It's our true love. You might find us rummaging through five floors of Christmas decor at the Atlanta Mart or at a cool accessories trade show in the Tuileries in Paris. The search is so much of the fun.
What is your best piece of shopping advice?
Buy things you love. And wear them. Be okay with having your own perspective.
What is your favorite Chicago restaurant?
We are really loving Charlie Martin's in River North right now. It has a broad appealing menu, and the room is sexy and cool in a very Mad Men way. You'll also often spot us at the bar at Gemini in Lincoln Park – we've been going there for almost 15 years. It's for sure our spot.
What is your favorite thing to do in your free time in Chicago?
We love walking on the Lake Path and in Lincoln Park. I dare anyone who thinks Chicago's is anything but amazing to take that walk. The skyline and lake are so beautiful and the mix of people of all ages walking, biking, and running accurately reflects the vibrancy of our city.
